The loneliness and resulting paranoia became almost palpable. Just the thought of being there, in eternal darkness and cold, all on your own with some unseen menace prowling around. Which is not something you'd ever want to happen to you. She managed to put you as a reader right there, on location, in the exact same situation as the narrator. Her descriptions of isolation and solitude really got to me after a while, again in the best possible manner. The entire trip there - the polar bear sighting! - was immensely foreboding in all the right ways. I adored the way Michelle Paver managed to describe the cold stillness of Gruhuken, though. but the way it was written, made it hard to follow (probably on purpose) and somehow, because of that, less creepy. I don't really know why, but when shit hit the fan in the final couple of chapters, it just kind of became less scary to me. I was a bit disappointed by the way the 'ghost sightings' escalated toward the end.
